I was checking on my email this evening and noticed that I had received an invite to one of those social networking sites from someone that has a blog that I read (and though I’ve commented here and there, I don’t think she knows who I am). Even though I abhor those fabulous social networking sites (MySpace and your equally miserable other named cohorts, I’m looking right at you) and I thought it was a little odd that I was receiving an invite from this other person, I went ahead and joined.
A little while later, I received another email telling me that this other individual had accepted my invite to be my ‘friend’. I already know the important details about this individual from their blog, but I was curious, so I decided to go check out their profile thingy on this social network site. Lo and behold–this other person had cancelled their membership and was now unregistered. Um, okay?!!!
Hopefully they realize that they sent me the initial email asking me to be their friend on their page (and that I was trying to overcome my distaste in general for networking sites and was trying to come out of my shell and network network network) and not that I’m some random weirdo stalker.
Also? If you are my friend/blog buddy/etc. never fear that I will send you an email asking you to be my ‘buddy’ on some lame social network site. I might require you to perform unspeakable acts involving my trash and recycle bins (out by the curb before Thursday morning at 7:30am sharp please thankyousomuch) as a token of your esteem for our friendship, but rest assured that I will never stoop so low as to make you join a lame site and add me to your buddy list.

Hey…..I got one of those social networking things, too. I didn’t accept, because, meh. But here’s what I’m wondering: if that site scrapes addresses from a blog’s comment section and sends “invites” supposedly from that blog owner. Then when the commenters accept (because they recognize the blogger), they’re actually just signing up, which then sends an invite to the oblivious blogger. Hmmmm.

I’m so not a fan of those sites. But I think Swistle might be on to something.

Swistle & CQ: Oooh…the possibility never occurred to me. Entirely possible (and thoroughly tacky on the part of the scraping service) though
GM: What can I say, I’m good like that
