I love the jars too! They are the perfect size for keeping beads and buttons and other fun little findings in.
I too freeze the food into 'cubes' and then crack them out into (carefully) labeled and dated ziplocks in the freezer. I'm using the best book for food ideas & recipes--I highly recommend it, "Super Baby Food" by Ruth Yaron.
We were too late in the season last year when we moved into our house to plant a garden, but I am hoping to be able to this year so I can put a bunch of stuff up as well. I have many happy memories of my grandmother's pantry with all the jars of canned things from the garden.

I like to make baby food, too! Same as you: it's not that I'm all militant about it (and I also see the appeal of buying lots of pretty little jars), but I enjoy it and find it a satisfying task. I froze the food in ice cube trays, then cracked them out into big ziplocs. It was such a happy feeling, seeing all those big ziplocs of different food cubes in the freezer. Probably the way pioneer women felt, surveying their jarred harvest.
